Big Walker Lookout is a scenic attraction in Southwest Virginia. At an elevation of 3,405 feet, Big Walker Lookout affords one of the most spectacular views of the Appalachian Mountains. Looking out over the patterned farms of Virginia in one direction and the untouched wilderness in another, you'll find it hard to believe that the views are real. As if the mountains' natural height weren't enough, Big Walker Lookout features an observation tower that puts you another 100 feet higher. Climb above the treetops to enjoy a view beyond belief. On a clear day, you'll even be able to see five states.

The Blue Ridge Parkway — known as America's Favorite Drive — meanders 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in northern Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The parkway follows the Appalachian Mountain chain and provides some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, ranging from 650 to 6,000 feet in elevation.
A hundred species of trees, a variety of flowering shrubs and wildflowers as well 54 different mammals and 59 species of birds live along the parkway, more than the entire European continent!

Developed sites along the parkway make it easy to stop, park, stretch, visit restrooms and exhibits, hike and get a bite to eat. Lodging and campgrounds are available with opportunities to fish and view wildlife.
A visit to the Jeff Matthews Memorial Museum is a rewarding experience for adults, families and children of all ages.

The nation's first exhibition coal mine is still in operation. The Pocahontas Exhibition Coal Mine is located in Pocahontas, Virginia and is about an hour-long drive from the similar Beckley Mine in WV. This exhibition mine was opened in 1938 and is open daily from April through October.
Pocahontas produced so much coal that many company owners became extremely rich and settled in nearby Bramwell. That small town had the highest number of millionaires per capita of any place in the country. There's a large number of incredible houses in a small area. The local high school sports teams are the Bramwell Millionaires.
